matcha
After a discussion this evening about matcha I just want to post an important fact:

"... and causes the production of amino acids that make the resulting tea sweeter.

The flavour of matcha is dominated by its amino acids. The highest grades of matcha have more intense sweetness and deeper flavour than the standard or coarser grades of tea harvested later in the year."

So (:-)), I don´t want to be bossy, but it looks like matcha does not necessarily have to be bitter.
However, I still like my matcha latte and matcha cannotz be compared by any means with any kind of coffee. But I didn´t want to start this discussion today.

I enjoyed the evening very much and I´m glad that Midechan was with us.

(blond?) model seeking man
cutout from a very famous newspaper in Germany. A woman is seeking a man. But wtf does she mean?

"Immer noch attraktives Model, Bj. 42, gut erhalten,
Innenausstattung wertvoll."

"still attractive model, built in 42 y., in good condition, valuable interior."

What is part if the womans interior. Does she mean she´s smart? Well this advert doesn´t show it. Big boobs? Still all teeth? Or are the ovaries still working?

Please tell me....

Oh women, don´t let me be misunderstood
I just wanted to be nice and said: "You look like you have a date tonight."

[Today she was dressed better than all the other days.] I was expecting a smile or some funny comment, but instead she answered with a dead serious face: "What do you mean? I´m going out with you guys, so why should I date one of you?"

No...-- I said nothing.

coloured slides
Today I picked up the color slides from the photoshop. Once more I was asking myself, what shall I do with all these pictures.

At the moment I´m not sure if I should simply do a homepage and present all the pictures or if I should do publish a book with the best pictures from the last 5 Years.

It´s interesting for me, how my pictures improved over the last years. I´m still using the same equipment, but comparing the pictures from Paris, which I would consider as the very series I did, and the pictures from Japan I can see a huge difference. In the technique itself and the composition of the picture. Here in Japan I learned a lot of new things.

Only 3 days to Hakone.

lazy bastard
My plan for the weekend is to go to Hakone area for some hiking and visiting Fuji-san. It will be a around a four hour drive by train so I decided to stay there over night.

I asked my colleagues if someone would like to join, since this will be the last weekend for us in Japan. I´m going alone. D. has an excuse, he already had planned a trip to one of the train spotting places here in the area, but A. is just lazy.

"I don´t know if I should go there. It´s 4 hours by train." , "When would you like to start?", " SO early, Let me think about it.", "Does this trip include hiking or only sitting in the bus?"

His final answer was: "No, I will be not in the mood to go hiking. You can go alone." Perfect. I don´t mind at all, because the one time I went with him hiking in Portland he was dead after not even 120m height difference. He went back, while I continued for ascending for another 1 1/2. Alright he is already in his early 40´s... and I´m in my late teen years. ;-)

To find a hotel or Ryokan was more difficult than I thought. There are hundreds, but the next weekend is a long holiday weekend and so most of the Hotels were already booked or so expensive that I could have taken a taxi to go back during the night. But I was lucky. Eventually I found a Ryokan for 36Euro per night. Unfortunately with shared bath and toilet, but it´s only one night.

So in case someone is keen on hiking, trains, boats, ropeways and having a good weekend at Mt. Fuji, you´re welcome to join.

Lacrimosa and port wine
I just found a very old Lacrimosa song. Almost instantly I could remember back to 1994, when I sat under the blinking stars in the grass with some friends and this bottle of port wine. A warm breeze was blowing along the streets and the Lacrimosa tape was running the whole night.

This was the night, when a girlfriend of mine said to me, while we were laying in the grass and watching the stars: "Hey, look! When you connect this star and this one and THIS one over there, you will get a triangle... [short break]... Oh, cute, over there it´s working too.."

G-watch americans
Is there any connection between the Casio G-watch and non-californian americans?

I guess so. Both are massive and I don´t know why. I realised it, when I was in america the first time. Most of the men are massive. Not necessarily fat, but massive. I can´t tell you something about their strength but the I can say that they are not famous for their stamina. The californians are different though.

Today I met again some americans from Portland /Oregon. Well, it was not the first time I met them but today I was impressed even more since I have seen not so many americans during the last months and people are rather small compared to these gyus. However, I saw them today sitting on table and was thinking how small I am. They all must be 190-200cm at least. I assume their BMI has to be around 27-29.
Whenever I see any pictures of armies around the world is most impressive to see the american guys. You can have a look at any european army or the japanese. The all look so small compared to the american army.

It´s kind of an open secret that there must be a hormone issue. I experienced it myself when I have been to SanFran. The beef over there was great. I loved it, but I never had such fast growing muscles again after I left the US.

So america is famous for the massive guys and massive trucks. Japan is famous for small cars on small streets, but nearly everyone has a Casio G watch. The most massive watch I know. Do americans compensate with cars and japanese with watches? But for what?

A perfect day, I´m sorry I spent it without you
Snow, there´s snow. On the street, on the cars, on the roofs. Everywhere snow. It´s almost 7°°. Toothbrushing, shaving, Speedshowering. It´s snowing, What should I do. Confusion. Mitsumine? Tokyo? Ahhhh.....

Doodling...

Nagatoro has everything from which I wanted to take a picture when it´s snowing.
Nagatoro. Today is the right day. Everything will look different. I don´t have to fear that my memories will vanish or overlapping. " Do one thing everyday that scares you." Alright, he said so, I will go for it.

The train is quite empty. The light is fantastic. Everything looks different. Not the usual bored faces in the train. Today I can see every detail in their faces. Their age, their life, their mood. I´m happy.
The train was late, so I lost the connection in Kumagaya. 40 minutes- daydreaming. I´m the only person in this car of the rapid special service. Silence, only the juddering of the wheels on the tracks. I could go forever in this train. The scenery is running by, cars can keep up for about 10 seconds, then they vanish in the wall of snowflakes.

Nagatoro is empty. No tourist as far as I can see. I´m the only one who gets off here. The last time there have been hundreds of people at the station and later moving through the narrow streets. Now there´s only one old man. He wears a helmet, has a cigarette in his mouth and walks with his umbrella along the street.

Down at the river I can see, that I´m the first person today. No footsteps. So I find my way through the white picturesque scenery. Ok, my memories are still alive. There was the guy playing the japanese flute for his truelove. The sounds echoed at the rocks on the other side of the river. Now there´s nothing. Silence. Not a word is disturbing this fantastic moment.
I could stay here forever. Daydreaming.

I make sure that the japanese snowflakes dancing with the same rhythm like the european pendants. Isn´t it great just to stand and to watch, to hear, to smell and to taste the snow. I love this feeling. No matter what will happen this day is perfect.

After a while I started to make a friend. He looked happy when I was finished. (I´m the one with the cap)

Time to move on. At the shrine a japanese first asked me where I´m from, what I´m doing here and so on. The normal procedure, but then he wanted to take a photo of me. The first time someone asked me for a photo. So we did a photoshooting in front of the shrine in Nagatoro.
At the shrine are more people than on downtown Nagatoro. They all seem to be happy today. I´m glad to see them enjoying the snow and the day. It makes me feel satisfied.

Some more pictures at the cemetery before I start hiking up the hill. I have seen some adverts that the plum blossom should be on right now. Well, we will see. The way winds up the hill through the forest. Again silence. I´m not the first one on this path today. There must have been a whole group. However I don´t meet anybody until I reach the top. The adverts was right: plum blossom. It´s not possible what I feel for the following minutes. I´m there. No sound around me. The only thing I see are this path, the snow and the plum blossoms. It smells like spring but it´s winter. I stay there at this place for 10 minutes or more, only deep breathing. I have my eyes closed. The snowflakes hitting my face, the smell in my nose and this absolute silence...

This is a perfect day!

White valentines day?
Everything is covered in snow (the frozen water, in case you wonder). Minimum 2m high.
Ok, maybe it´s only 0,5 cm, but everything is covered.

I have no time to lose. I´m not sure if I still should go with the Chichibu line to Mitsumine or better take the train to Tokyo to get some nice pictures.... Difficult question. I have to ask the

oracle of Tokyo

.

Yupp, I knew. Tokyo city only snow rain. I will take the chichibu line. Either to Nagatoro or Mitsumine.

bleeding hearts for german engineers
I´ve completed the holy quest for "Momo".

And I´ve been to Kichijouji. Margie was right, I liked it. The town is like a comprehension of Japan. Shopping streets like Hiroshima and Nagasaki, small streets with old buildings like Kyoto, Temples like everywhere else in Japan, normal new buildings like Tokyo and parks.
But this place has something special. I´m aware of three things that are different to most of Japan.

1st: This place has an huge amount of Gaikokujin. Black people, white people, indians, europeans, americans... This fact itself is not sooo special, BUT they say hello to each other. It happened not the first time to me in Japan, that other foreigners were greeting each other, but soon after my first contacts with other foreigners I found out, that only those were paying attention to others, who might have realised that they will be different, no matter what. Best example Yokohama. There you can meet the normal amount of foreigners like in every big city. But it´s the best place to do some background study.

I´m open minded and I think I´m friendly enough to say hello to everyone who seems to be expecting something like this. I´m a normal foreigner, blond hair, no brown eyes - so everybody can recognize me as one very easy.

In Yokohama you can meet three different types of foreigners. Tourists, locals (people living there) and boy/girlfriends. Well, I assume that the tourists and the locals are aware of the situation that they are different. The boy/girlfriend type, however, seems to think that´s people automatically japanese when being together with an Japanese. Invisible for other foreigners.

Being in Yokohama several times, having traveled through the southwest of Japan, I can assure you, that none of the boy/girlfriend foreigners was saying hello. Minimum 80% of the others will say hello to you, when meeting outside of an typical tourist spot. Back to Kichijouji. There every foreigners said hello to me. With or without japanese friend, didn´t matter. It was crazy. The greeting factor was 100% (and I met 27 foreigners). Incredible.

2nd: This is the richest area I´ve seen so far. BMW´s, Audis, Mercedes, Porsches, Lamborghini, Ferraris you can find every brand there.
In the japanese branch of my company there´s a sign, which means roughly translated: "A scratch on the panel is a scratch on your heart!"
Today my heart was bleeding. I don´t like cars as much as I probably should (I´m a man), but today it made me cry to see an "expensive-gorgeous-beautiful-well designed-perfectly handcrafted-strong-dream of every young boy-marry me girl" car in a state where I think nobody would say: "I don´t care"
Even if I would have enough money to effort 30 of these cars, I would never ever ever ever do this to it. See yourself:

3rd: This must be the capitol of the hairdresser union. 13 shops within 200m. It was impressing that every one of these shops was filled with people.

And they had an outlet store for Jack Wolfskin:

I would have been angry too, but I would not sit in the lobby for 3 hours to wait until someone picks up his clothes from the washing machine. I would have taken the things and would have put them into the dryer. But this guy sits there, doing nothing then just looking angry. Back in the old days I would have been dead by now. California dreaming
I found some pictures from the bay area on my computer . I didn´t know that I brought them to Japan. Fair enough, but now I really really want to take my bike and go on ride along the coast or take the board and go surfing in the half moon bay.

It´s strange. Still in Japan, I´m really looking forward to go home now, but I still want to go somewhere else. It must be a travel gene. If someone would offer me a ticket to California after spending two weeks at home, I think I would not deny.

Human ideas -- all the same
We humans are more or less all the same. Race, sex, doesn´t matter.

I wanted to do the heartbreak hotel a favour and I took a picture of an japanese WC. The whole day I was thinking about what to write in the blog to make this picture a little bit more interesting. Looking at the picture I thought,
well looks like a seat from Star Trek. It might be cool, I thought, to have a picture from the movie with Captain Kirk sitting in his chair, which looks like like the japanese toilet. I only needed a picture of the Star Trek chair.
Shouldn´t be the problem. So I googled for "captain kirk seat" What did I find? --> http://images.google.co.jp/imgres?imgurl=http://farm1.static.flickr.com/1/1059280_e090772ab7.jpg&imgrefurl=http://www.flickr.com/photos/kagoldberg/1059280/in/set-543427/&h=400&w=500&sz=32&hl=ja&start=2&um=1&tbnid=mxahMQzkE1EkkM:&tbnh=104&tbnw=130&prev=/images%3Fq%3Dcaptain%2Bkirk%2Bseat%26um%3D1%26hl%3Dja%26client%3Dfirefox-a%26rls%3Dorg.mozilla:en-US:official%26hs%3DyjY%26sa%3DN

weekend plans
The weekend is approaching fast and furious. As always, I didn´t know, until the last minute, if I have to work on the weekend. It turned out that the weekend is kind of free. So, if I´m bored I can go to work, If not I can stay wherever I want. I decided for the last option.

For the weekend there are several options. I have to buy "Momo" which should not be a big deal, that´s the must-do.
Following possibilities are available:

1. become liquid and stay in bed, while hugging my pillow
2. go for a ride with the chichibu line
a) to chichibu and see the snow, or go
b) to Nagatoro to see the plum blossoms
3. visit the Rikugien garden in Tokyo
4. visit the Tokyo Metropolitan Museum of photography
5. take my bike and go for the hills

The first suggestion is dismissed immediately, while the 2nd sounds fun, but I have been to Nagatoro already and had a great day there. Going there again might disturb my memories (<--- There it is ;-) from the first trip. Chichibu sounds interesting. The garden might be interesting too but is not enough for a whole day. So I might combine it with the museum. The bike (option 5) I will only consider when it´s not windy. So the chances are low that the "mama bike" might become an uphill racer.

Let get this straight. One day Chichibu and the other day garden with museum. Allright. When I´m doing which one, I will decide in the morning. Depends on my general mood and the weather.

anniversary
In the company I´m working for it´s common practice that several times a year a round mail is sent, which says: "please come to join my (whatever) party in the kitchen in the 2nd floor."

I hate these emails. They are sent to everybody, clearly knowing that 95% of the staff cannot attend, because they are working somewhere in the world. The only guys attending these parties are considered to be higher management.

Knowing this, I celebrated my own anniversary. I´m now with the company for 2 years. So invited everybody to the break room here in Japan :-) Well knowing that only 4 people can attend... I know I´m mean. But it was fun. The only guys answering my invitation were:
- my boss, who wished me luck for the next few years and
- another colleague, from whom I know that he hates this emails as well. His respond I liked the most. It was honest, full of excitement and positive reflection of my work in the past:

"Fuck you! ;-)"

He´s a nice guy and this is his opinion about these kind of mails addressed to everybody.

Beside that the 5 cakes (Baumkuchen) I bought were mostly gone after the lunch break. When I returned this evening even the plate was gone. Someone must have been very hungry.

PS: Whoever has eaten the plate, please return it. It´s the only one I have... ;-(

dreaming japanese
On Monday I had a strange dream. I almost forgot this one, but it´s so strange that I have to write this one down. My dream:

I´m sitting somewhere in a small room. I can´t see much, although it´s light in there. I can see a person sitting opposite on the table. It´s my colleague Tim, who is in Japan the first time and arrived on sunday. Well, he´s not a genius regarding languages and so I´m stunned when he asks me questions in Japanese with a perfect pronouncation.

[ I don´t how I managed to dream about words I heard only ones or twice before without counting them to my knowledge at all.]

However, I tried to answer his questions in Japanese, but I sounded so stupid compared to his perfect japanese. He was asking me question like, about Japan in general, about grammar and the different counting systems. I wasn´t able to answer all questions but I did my best [Actually in my dream I did better, than I would have in real life.] His final statement was in english:
"How long are you now in Japan? Four months and you still can barely speak this language!"

I woke up around 2°° in the morning and I couldn´t fall asleep for a long long time.

The positive thing about this dream is, that I´m newly motivated to learn this language.

elevating the doodles
Today I learned a new word: doodle. Well, I have known "magna doodle" before, but I never recognized doodle as verb. However, I doodled a lot during the last weeks and eventually I found a proper word for my action.

Exactly 3 years ago, I was the happiest man on earth. Sleepy, excited, worried, overwhelmed and full of energy. This was the day when my daughter was born. Today I´m proud, but a little bit sad, since I can´t join her birthday party. I will Skype her this evening and so I will be a part of the party, when she will blow off her 3 candles.

Momo
I shouldn´t name the title Momo. I know, but it´s the truth. Momo rules my mind right now.

Well, I had a really great evening with one of my japanese colleagues, his wife and his daughter named Momo.

I enjoyed the evening so much, I could cry. Damn, I hate Japan. Since I´m here I cry so often, I think it´s not normal anymore. I´m watching romantic movies-cry; I listen to great music -cry; I have something nice to eat- cry; I´m happy- cry; I had a nice evening -cry; I´m sad- no cry. Why?

Momo is so cute and nice, I would adopt here immediately. However, they named their daughter Momo, without knowing the novel "Momo" from Michael Ende. My task for the last two weeks here in Japan will be to find this book in an japanese bookstore translated into Japanese and buy it. I think every child should read this book, especially when your name is Momo.

PS: I´m happy, I´m really happy. It´s not a lie.

Who said I´m sad?
I´m not, I´m dancing with myself.

A few days ago I gave herzbruch the advise to hear some new music to get over it. Well, I did the same. I´m over it.
Now I found my ultimate Japan song, which makes me feel so free and happy. All the sorrows are gone, because I´m dancing with myself, down in Tokyo..

dumdidum...

"If I looked all over the world
And there's every type of girl
But your empty eyes
Seem to pass me by
Leave me dancing with myself

So let's sink another drink
'Cause it'll give me time to think
If I had the chance
I'd ask the world to dance
And I'll be dancing with myself"

Time to sweat baby!

After writing an email to my american friend and getting almost instantly an answer I´m feeling much better now. Her BIG HUG was exactly the thing what I needed and she gave me following thought on my way:

"The only time for happiness is the present. The future is not real and the past is gone. To obtain happiness, we have to find a way to balance ourselves so that we can enjoy the moment we are in."

The truth is sometimes so present that we can´t see it.

Climate and Japan
http://www.alertnet.org/thenews/newsdesk/L26678137.htm

"Japan targets climate change with $10 billion fund." for emerging countries and "will also be investing about $30 billion in research and development in the environment and energy sectors over the next five years. "

Great thought. Well, I have an idea. I can tell you how to improve your statistics without spending $30 billion dollars. Use less packaging materials and start to isolate your houses!!

When I traveled trough Japan in wintertime I only had an accommodation twice, which was not wasting energy just by having open holes somewhere in the house. I don´t want to start about the electrical heating even in places where the hot water comes out of the earth to run down the street, without being used for anything useful.

One of my key experiences was the day when a japanese colleague of mine came back from Germany in january. He said, that he was freezing to death in his japanese house, although it´s warmer in Japan than in Germany. In Germany, he said, he had the heating turned off, but it was warm in his room. Even in Germany we are wasting energy in various places and it´s not the best way of living while trying to save the planet, but some standards have been set in the past and I´m glad about it.

I think the japanese people know about the problem with the isolation of their houses. I can´t imagine that you have to spent $30 billion to get some basic ideas what can be done better.

So please, whenever you have the possibility to isolate your house, use less packaging materials or to switch off your hightech closet: DO IT!

parallel synchronized randomness
Today I experienced the first time P.S.R. - parallel synchronized randomness - with an japanese.
In this case the "avoiding collision theory" from Omi-san was right, although it was only one occurrence of P.S.R. since months. However, I´m still evaluating the theory.

After 3 months and 1 week I eventually found what I was looking for since I came to Japan. A place to rest. I wonder why nobody suggested it before: Yoyogi Park in Shibuya. This place is great. It´s the best Park in the whole Tokyo area. All kind of people meeting here doing their own hobby. Girls improving their catwalk style, step dancer, Kung-Fu fighter, drummers, guitar players, scouts, painting classes, dancers, photography courses, skateboarders, etc.

Whenever you need someone who might share your interests. here you will find the right person. Thus I found my free hugs. I was so happy. Ok, I hugged 6 days ago, but It´s still not enough. I can´t get no satisfaction. I´m missing body contact.

This finally made my day.

how does the tuna fit the can?
After 10 hours 12 minutes, 246 pictures, 3 film documents, 1 cappuccino, 1 lost american and 210 minutes on the train I´m back in the hotel. I´m so glad that I kicked myself out of the bed this morning. The day was perfect.

Let´s look back:

It´s not as cold as I thought. The station is full with trains. Maybe that´s the reason why it is called terminal and not station. The trains are sleeping here. Beside me there are 12 people waiting for the train. It´s still dark. Not a sign of the dawn. The moon stands high but is not full.
The train is empty and I´m sleeping before reaching the next station. Whenever I wake up the people opposite of me are looking at me. Seems like sleepy gaikujin are not often in the early trains. Who cares. It´s not the first time that japanese taking pictures of me, while sleeping.
Surprisingly the train is full when we reach Ueno station. Ueno is full of snowboarders. I would like to follow them, but my mission is the tuna.

Subway to Tsukiji station. The morning has broken. Damn, I wanted to be there in the dark. But it was the first train. We´ll see how it works out. More light means faster shutter speed, which is also alright.
Before even reaching the market itself the street is crowded with people. Some of them looking like they are on their way home, others having breakfast at one of the many small kitchen along the way. The closer I am to the market the more people and cars I see. It get´s louder with every step. The main entrance. Honking. Small vehicles with a huge amount of packages crossing the street. people running across and nobody seems to take care of the other. It´s a controlled chaos. As fast as possible leaving the street and into the market hall. I thought the motor carts would stop outside. No way.

The carts are driving through the stream of people negotiating the price of the fish. Also some tourist are here. Poor american girls. Dressed in completely white clothes they are wandering through the fishy and bloody hall. It´s time to regret, I think.
The hall is completely different to the fish market I have seen in Hamburg (Germany). It´s more chaotic, less touristy and much more different sorts of fish and seafood.
It´s a must see to watch the guys preparing the tuna for sale and all the different kinds of shrimps, squids and octopus. The clock shows nearly 9°°. Time to go. Most of the customers are leaving as well.

"flesh fish" in the morning
Tomorrow: fish market in Tokyo. I thought I´ll better be there around 5:30 am so I can see most of the authentic life. Well, great thought, but to be there, I have to start at 23°° this evening. I won´t do this.

Instead the first train will leave around 5°°, so I will be there around 6:30 am. Might be early enough, if not... I will go straight to the sushi breakfast.

missing the shabu shabu no sensai
Shabu shabu is not the same without Midechan. It´s still tasty, but the others taking the shabu shabu way too serious. In fact our lovely non orientation girl took it so seriously that her trousers now make the shabu shabu sound :-) ==> "I´m so clumsy.." No, she was to drunk to coordinate her actions.

I like the current weather condition. Clear sky, bright moonlight, extremely cold and stormy. I already walked back from the restaurant, but I did an extra round to enjoy the night. It´s so wonderful.

new life in springtime
This day could change my life. My wife has applied for a new job and today she has her final meeting with her new boss. When she will be successful, I do not have to worry about my work and our financial situation anymore. It will get me my family in a situation where a second child is not a dream anymore, where

After the rain yesterday the sun shines again. I feel like spring. The days getting longer, it seems like it´s getting warmer every day and my body is full of energy. I hope that I don´t miss the spring in Germany. The beginning of spring with the first few warm days, when the temperature is raising above 10° are the most beautiful.
Then the life comes back to every individual and every tree, every flower and the grass starts to grow again.

I feel like a bird. I left my home in autumn stayed during the winter in a different world and soon I will go back and enjoy the sun and life. Sitting in the garden under a tree and thinking about the beauty of life. Collecting energy from the blooming life around me and making plans for the future .
I am alive.
